Asian interest

Vancouver Sun
As Dan Gawthrop's article (Hail the Conquering Asian, Oct. 2) pointed out, the face of British Columbia is in the midst of dramatic change and in my view we are all the richer for it.

Each new wave of immigration has left our province richer both culturally and economically. Rather than being some British colonial backwater, Vancouver has emerged as one of the most beautiful and dynamic cities in the world.

By writing about the role that his own Grandfather played in the internment of thousands of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, Dan Gawthrop illustrates how far attitudes have shifted in only a few generations. It is a shift that many Asian nations have yet to make, especially countries like Japan, which have extremely restrictive immigration policies.

In an era of aging populations and declining birth rates, it is the countries that can attract young immigrants that will prosper the most in the 21st century.
